Sleeping Apple (MacBook Air Won’t Turn On)

20141211-180024-64824794.jpg

Most of us have heard the saying, “That’s the best thing since sliced bread!” What do you think is actually the best thing since sliced bread?

I think, it means something that makes our life becomes much easier and practical. For me, it is technology and the internet. That we can easily get information about anything we want. Anything. From a good recipe to how we can avoid ourselves of spending money to fix something that is apparently can be done at home. As what happened a couple of months ago to my Macbook Air that transformed into a Sleeping Apple.

Sleeping Apple. Hey! It’s Sleeping Beauty, you said. The snow white ate the cursed apple then she fell asleep until a (luckily) prince of charming kissed and woke her. That’s fairytale of the Grimms, the German authors. I have another story. It began with an Apple, hopefully not the cursed one. Not that round juicy fruit, but a MacBook Air my husband bought for me in June 2013. One Saturday I made a speech by the MacBook being charged. When it had done, I shut it down properly (as usual), Apple menu and Shut Down. I left it still being charged. A few hours later, my husband asked me. “Can’t we use the laptop while it is still being charged?” “Of course, we can.” I said. “Look.” I pressed the power button. Nothing. I pressed it again. Nothing. Now. It became a bit serious. I pressed it. Pressssed it. NOTHING. The screen was staring at us in an absolute darkness and no chime sound heard. Silent. My Apple was dead. Dropped dead. As we paid it by credit card. The debt was just finished. Technically it was still new. It couldn’t be broken. I felt terrible. Thinking about how much we had spent our money to buy it. No need to say my losing important data.

One day after, my husband took it to the Global Service Centre at jalan Imam Bonjol, Denpasar, the only Apple Service Centre in Bali. They said they would call in 2 days to tell what cause the problem and whether we need to replace ‘something’ to make it well. Replace surely meant buy. Since, I was dealing with Apple. I think, nothing is cheap. Agree? If you don’t. Clearly, you are living in a different world. Then, as promised. They called my husband and said they had to replace the motherboard. It cost 7 millions rupiahs (around $583), equals to my family daily meals (from breakfast to dinner) for 2 months! It was too much. So, my husband took it home in its box and put it on the table. It looked like new. Meanwhile, still felt terrible, I searched in the internet: macbook air won’t turn on.

As I thought, we shouldn’t give up that fast, right? Who knows, an answer was waiting out there, somewhere to be found. Many results shown. Luckily, I chose the right one from youtube. The boy in the video, Butler said to let the Macbook for few days without plugging in the battery (so that its totally off), and then turned it on by pushing shift+control+alt option+command+power at the same time. Although it was on MacBook Pro, I decided to give a shot. Nothing to loose and it was free anyway. I waited for 3 days. Lived my life as it should be. In the morning. At 04.30, I pushed shift+control+alt option+command+power at the same time. Nothing happened. This Apple product still dropped dead. Then, I plugged in the magsafe 2 (another word: charger connector) to the MacBook. IT WORKS! It really works. I heard the chime sound. And the Apple logo came out in the screen. I felt SOOO GOOD. Like winning something unexpectedly. Like able to save our money 7 millions rupiahs. Like able to keep my important data.

I am wondering. Where was the Global Service Centre got the idea of replacing my Apple motherboard. An easy decision but very expensive for a customer. My Apple didn’t drop dead. It was just sleeping. Very soundly. My sleeping Apple had woke up already. Back to work with me. Again.

Disclaimer: the cheese banana sandwich in the right side of the MacBook Air has nothing to do with this story. It is only a support when my brain works and the stomach needs something to be digested.

  2. Oh dear…sounds like the guys your husband took your Mac Book to were trying to cheat you. Apple never ever admits it’s bugs and mess-ups. They always say it is user error but they have had problems with cords doing just what yours did. I’m glad you got it fixed.

  3. I’m really hoping this work, mine died around 3 days ago bought a new MagSafe since my previous one wasn’t reaponding whatsoever so I blamed it on it dying, however the new one wasn’t reaponsive either (light wasn’t turning on). Then after doing lots of searching and reprogramming things through the keyboard and it all failing I thought I should take it in, however I noticed the MagSafe light turn on green today I decided to try a bit more on my own and stumbled upon this and I’m really hoping it works, see you in 3 days and hopefully I repost in my Mac….

  4. Sleeping Freeze is common issue on Macbook Air. I dont know why, my 2010 MBA wont turn on after sleep or restart. Its kinda … You know what, there are no light indicator to tell current state. The simplies way is hold power button few second to force turn off, then press again twice to turn on. And its work.

  5. Glad you got your Macbook Air to wake up. My boyfriend’s Ipod did the same to him. All the hours it would have taken to transfer thousands of songs from Itunes and cd’s. Hope you and your Macbook Air are still doing well.

  6. Hello there. My macbook air have the exact symtoms. Without any reason it wont turn on. I assumed the first time that the battery was just drained. So i pluged my magsafe. But it wouldnt charge (no light whatsoever). I went at apple store to check for a new magsafe but i discovered, there ia nothing wrong with my magsafe. It is working with their demo units. So i pressume it is my macbook air that has the problem. I went at apple service center today to have it checked. They said they will give me back diagnosis within 3-5 days. If ever they will ask me to change the motherboard which costs too much, i will definitely try your process. Hope it works. I will update you sooner about it. Hoping ik using my macbook pro then. Please pray for my MBAir. I just had it for 8 months and i paid too much for it. Im a working student and i had so much hardship in saving for my dream laptop.

Thanks for your post. Its so informative and i have gained so much confidence for it to be fixed.

  9. haha, i am so soooo glad, the mac runs again , and not by the way that you mentioned though, what i did was, i removed all screws of the backside, then disconnected the battery connected cable to the motherboard, and after the battery was disconnected, plugged in the magsafe(charger) and pressed the power button, the mac launched, i was so happy, i screamed inside like( cant express) , and now i entered user password and entered , then shutdown the macbook, disconnected the charger, and connected the battery(cord) back to the motherboard, then attached the back cover, inserted back all the screws and then connected charger again, and launched it booted again perfectly, now that the battery had charged i disconnected the charger and yea it was running on battery now and it was completely fine, i am writing this from the macbook, yea !! , before this notebook was completely dead, like when i pressed the powerbutton nothing shows on the screen, no fan sound, no chime, no nothing just a lack screen and the only sound i was hearing was me pressing the power button- so i am going to make a youtube video too about this , because this is so effective , so for everyone who couldn’t fix their notebook by the above method i request you do this! THIS WILL DEFINITELY HELP!! – an thanks to id ayu indah for the blog because this motivated me somehow to fix the macbook , thanks 🙂

  13. This worked for me too! So relieved after the computer just shut off and was unresponsive. Only waited about 36 hours before turning it on again…it had been making an incredibly faint clicking sound which had stopped so I thought the battery was completely drained. Thank you so much for sharing this information!

  15. Hi same thing happened here too.
Now I am out of town for my business trip where is not near Apple store.
I have tried SMC reset and everything but nothing works. I am soooo desperate.

Thank you for your tip. I’ll definitely try it.

By the way, my Macair occasionally has chime (without me doing anything, it just sit on my table) and Apple logo flashing light while the lid is closed. When I lift the lid open, it went black out again. This thing happen 2-3 times. Did you experience this too?

Ive tried all the Internet solutions, reseting the SMC, resetting the NVRAM, etc. and still no luck. 😦 I was using my MBA yesterday afternoon and got up to get a water and literally MINUTES LATER after I come back, the screen is black, keyboard unresponsive, and won’t turn on. The laptop still holds a charge though, but regardless will not turn on. Help!!! Does this sound like your problem?

  18. MacBook Air died on me one night.magsafe charger doesn’t work,no start up chime no display nothing.took it to an authorised Apple service centre in India.got a call saying that it’s a logic board failure and replacement cost is 666 $.brought it back home and put it aside.after a month or so I simply plugged in the MagSafe and it started charging, green light turned to orange.

So I immediately called the service guy and took it there he was able to verify it but the Mac still doesn’t turn on.so he opened the lid and said that the logic board is not getting power and the battery is not charging(inferred all this from the fact that fan was not rotating).

Orange light indicates charging of battery so I asked him if the board isn’t getting any power supply how come the battery was charging.he put up a question mark face.so I brought it back home and put it for charging for a couple of hours and MagSafe light turned green so the battery was full.

I have tried smc reset, pram reset, battery reset till now nothing happened.please someone help me out..I still desperately believe there is still life in my MacBook Air and I want it to live again ..

Should I keep the lid open or closed for these 3 days ..I want to try that too..

    Thank you

    • My MacBook is doing fine until now. I’m using it only for office works and blogging. The iPhoto program has crushed a few days ago, but after I deleted many (many photos) I have kept, it runs well again. Probably, your MacBook just too heavy with too many files? Just a thought, I’m not a professional in computer matters. You’re welcome.😀

  25. It worked like charm. Dear Ida Ayu Indah thank you so much for that life saving tip. That apple genius store guy told the circuit may be fired and needs replacement. I have saved a multitude of official documents in that laptop and all are intact. I owe you big time and thank you so much once again.
